Medcalf gets district tennis berth

PORTSMOUTH - Lovell Medcalf might change his

name to Love II.

For the second straight season, Ironton sophomore Lovell Medcalf has qualified for the district tennis tournament. It will be held Friday and Saturday, May 20-21, in Columbus at the Columbus School for Girls.

Medcalf, the No. 1 seed, drew a first round bye in the sectionals and then swept Nathan Smith of Hillsboro 6-0, 6-0. He did the same to Andrew Lukas of Hillsboro and Deven Reiser of Portsmouth West.

In the semifinals, Medcalf had his toughest match as he beat No. 3 seed Chad Pierron of Wheelersburg 7-5, 6-3

He downed No. 2 seed Tyler Adams of Wheelersburg in the finals, 6-3, 7-6 (7-5).

In other matches, Ironton's Britt Roach won his first three matches before losing to Adams 6-1, 6-0. He beat Nate Hopkins 6-0, 6-0, of Waverly, Matt West of Vinton County 6-0, 6-0, and Jayme Haggerty of Gallipolis 2-6, 6-4, 6-2.

D.J. Carter lost 6-0, 6-0 to Waverly's Skymr Bevens.

In doubles play, Marcus Williams and Robbie Downs lost 7-5, 6-3 to Curnutte and Sanders of Gallipolis.

Brian Wirzfeld and Demetrius Givens won their first two matches, 6-1, 6-2 over Lowery and Park of Vinton County, and 6-4, 6-4 over Hojat and Huffman of Gallipolis. They lost 6-0, 6-1 to Thiel and Dodridge of Minford.
