PROCTORVILLE - The South Point Lady Pointers asked for a wake up call and they wanted it by Friday night.

After finishing behind Rock Hill, Fairland and Coal Grove at the Rock Hill Invitational last week, Lady Pointers coach Joe Stevens said his team took a splash of cold water in the face.

"They were ready tonight. They made a statement after getting beat last week. It was a real wake up call for them," Stevens said.

South Point finished with 147 points. Fairland was second with 117.5 followed by Rock Hill with 84, Coal Grove 78, Chesapeake 53.5 and River Valley 37.

It was the second straight year South Point and Fairland finished 1-2 in the meet.

Sophomore standout Sarah Lee won meet high point honors for the second straight year with 36 points.

Lee won the 100- and 200-meter dashes, the long jump and was third in the high jump.

"Sarah Lee really came up big for us," Stevens said.

Lee was the only first place finisher for South Point.

Emily Barker took first place in the 1600-meter run as she edge Kelsey Cooper of Rock Hill and Summer Malone won the 100 and 300 meter hurdles.

Kayla Smith had a big night as she finished second in the shot put and discus.

"The girls just gelled," Stevens said. "It was a total team effort. Emily Barker got a big win. Jessi Craft got us some big points in the 100-meter dash and had her best jump in the long jump. We just had a bunch of kids who got better and better and did well for us tonight.

"Smith gave us a nice effort in the shot put and discus, and our relays did better than everyone expected."

Fairland had two girls who came away with double victories in their respective events.

Bethany Barbour broke her own school record in the shot put (36-2) and also won the discus. Brittany Brunty remained unbeaten this season in the 800 meter run and stepped in to win the 400 meter dash, a race she doesn't usually run.

Brunty also ran the anchor leg on the winning 4×400 relay team along with Kacie Lydell, Emma Baker and Molly Bumgardner.
