CHESAPEAKE - School may be out, but some students are still hitting the books - at the library, that is.

The Chesapeake Branch of the Briggs Lawrence County Public Library had its kick-off celebration for its Summer Reading program Tuesday afternoon. Several students and parents were on hand to join in on the fun.

"Making the arts and crafts, that's my favorite thing," 7-year-old Elizabeth Watson said while coloring her mobile during the program.

Ardella Watson of Chesapeake has been coming to programs at the library for 3 years. She said that it helps with learning and the summer program really motivates her to work with her son Hunter and help him learn to read before he starts kindergarten. Her daughter Elizabeth learned to read the same way.

The theme for this summer's program is Dragons, Dreams and Daring Deeds which centers on medieval times. Programs for different age groups are available each week and consist of stories, crafts and games.

The youth have to read various numbers of books, according to age, each week to get weekly prizes. The program is offered at all branches of the library.

Angela Forth brings her daughters Alyssa, 5, and Amanda, 11, to the program. Forth said that her children love it and they have a lot of fun. Her daughter Alyssa who will start kindergarten in the fall said that reading is her favorite part of the program.

"I like it," Alyssa Forth said.

Susie Pierce has been attending the library programs with her children Micaiah, 5, and Christian, 4, for eight months. Pierce said that they have a library that is within walking distance of their house, but they decided to drive the 20 minutes to come to Chesapeake.

"We love it, we think it's the best story hour around," Pierce said. "It's a great program."

Pierce said that they home school their children and going to the library is something they do to get out and meet people, and she said it's a good supplement to reading as well.
