A Columbus man arrested on drug charges and a Coal Grove man accused of domestic violence were among those sentenced last week in Lawrence County Common Pleas Court.

Kanton Talley, 21,

pleaded guilty in July to one count of first-degree felony trafficking in crack cocaine and one count of first-degree felony possession of cocaine.

On Wednesday, Lawrence County Common Pleas Judge Richard Walton

sentenced Talley to four years in prison on each charge.

Walton further ordered Talley to pay a total of $20,000 in fines and surrender his driver's license for three years. Walton agreed to allow this sentence to be served concurrently with any sentence talley receives for charges he is facing in Cabell County, W.Va.

&#8220Can I get early release granted before I go (to prison)?” Talley asked Walton during his sentencing.

&#8220You will need to talk to your attorney (Philip Heald) about that,” Walton replied.

Lawrence County Prosecutor J.B. Collier Jr. said no mention had been made of early release in Talley's plea agreement because of the nature of his crimes and his criminal history.

Also Wednesday, Glendel Johnson, 48, of 119 Patrick St., Coal Grove, pleaded guilty to third-degree domestic violence. Walton sentenced Johnson to four years intensive supervised probation and ordered him to have no further contact with his victim. If Johnson violates the terms of his sanctions he could be sent to prison for two years.

&#8220I suggest you talk to them (probation officials) about anger management,” Walton said.

&#8220Š You don't want to be back in here. I don't want to see you sitting here and you don't want to sitting in that seat again.”

An Ironton woman accused of writing a bogus check was sentenced to four years probation and 90 days home confinement.

Kathryn McGinnis, 51, 2319 S. Seventh St., pleaded guilty previously to one count of fourth-degree felony passing bad checks. She paid $21,000 restitution to the victim last week. If she violates the terms of her sanctions she could be sent to prison for 17 months. McGinnis is accused of borrowing money from another individual and then paying back the amount owed with a personal check written on a closed account.

James Deer, 23, of 1136 County Road 22, was sentenced to 90 days home confinement and four years intensive supervised probation. He was ordered to make restitution to his victim. Deer had previously pleaded guilty to third degree felony fleeing and eluding in connection with a traffic accident in Ironton earlier this year.

&#8220You were leaving a bar and were intoxicated and trying to use the lines of the road as a guide and plowed into some other cars,” Lawrence County Common Pleas Judge Frank McCown noted as he sentenced Deer. &#8220You don't want to be drinking and driving.”

Waylon Spurlock, 20, of 4204 State Route 243, Coal Grove, pleaded guilty Wednesday to one count of fourth-degree felony grand theft. McCown sentenced Spurlock to four years community controlled sanctions, including 140 days in jail.

He was given credit for time served awaiting conclusion of his case. He must also pay restitution in an amount of to be determined. He is accused of breaking into an Ironton garage in February 2004 and taking a Geo Tracker.
