Offensive struggles hurt CG girls in opener

WHEELERSBURG - The Coal Grove Lady Hornets needed some high-powered offense. Instead, they got unleaded regular.
Coal Grove, which averaged more than 50 points a game last season, struggled offensively in its opener as the Lady Hornets lost 38-35 to the Wheelersburg Lady Pirates Saturday in the season opener for both teams.
“We just have to put the ball in the basket. Defensively, if you hold a team to 38 points, that's pretty good,” Lady Hornets coach Nick Miller said. “We're a pretty good offensive team, but we didn't show it tonight.”
Wheelersburg jumped out to a 10-0 lead to start the game before Coal Grove came back to take a 21-18 halftime lead as Samantha Hall scored six straight points in the second quarter.
“We got off to a slow start and then outscored them the rest of the game, but we weren't consistent with our scoring. We had a chance at the end, we just didn't convert,” Miller said.
Wheelersburg came back in the third quarter to outscore Coal Grove 12-7 and grab a 30-28 lead.
The Lady Pirates held on in the fourth quarter as Coal Grove failed to connect on a 3-point goal on the final possession of the game.
Hall had 12 points and Chelsea Markins 10 points to lead the Lady Hornets.
Brooke Baker had 13 points to pace Wheelersburg.
