COAL GROVE - Chelsea Markins did what she usually does, but this time she got plenty of help.

Markins had 29 points including five 3-point goals and freshman Jordyn Cox added 16 points as she made four 3-pointers to lead the Coal Grove Lady Hornets to a 59-48 win Tuesday.

&#8220Both Chelsea and Jordyn had big games. They played well,” Coal Grove coach Nick Miller said.

&#8220Piketon had a lot of size and we had some matchup problems, and because we were focusing inside and then we lost the Burns girl and she kept hitting 3-pointers.”

Markins drained three 3-pointers in the first quarter as Coal Grove took a 13-10 lead.

In the second quarter, Markins had 10 points as the Lady Hornets went up 30-25 at the half.

Raceland 48, Green 27

RACELAND, Ky. - The pressure cooker left a burnt taste in the Green Lady Bobcats mouths.

The Raceland Lady Rams used pressure defense to force turnovers and beat Green 48-27 Monday in the season opener for both teams.

&#8220The key is we didn't handle their pressure very well,” Green coach Dale Royse said. &#8220But Raceland is a very talented team.”

Elista Hall scored 11 points to lead the Lady Bobcats.

Royse had praise for freshman Ashley Runyon who scored 4 points.

&#8220Ashley Runyon came off the bench and played really well for us in her varsity game. That was nice to see,” Royse said.

Raceland jumped out to an 18-8 lead after the first quarter and built a 31-12 cushion at the half.

Green hosts Southern Ohio Conference preseason favorite Portsmouth Clay Thursday.
