CHESAPEAKE — With the conference championship already in hand, the Chesapeake Panthers had one more goal to accomplish.

Finishing the Ohio Valley Conference schedule unbeaten.

The Panthers completed their regular season goals with a 78-36 rout of the Coal Grove Hornets to finish the OVC schedule 10-0.

“We played pretty well,” Panthers coach Norm Persin.

“It’s a nice accomplishment to go unbeaten in the conference. A lot of things can happen during the course of a season, so we’re fortunate to have played well so consistently.”

Chesapeake (17-2) placed four players in double figures with Justin Porter scoring 20 points. Mike Stapleton scored 14 points P.J. Rase 13 and Tyler Shoemaker 12.

Coal Grove (6-14, 1-9) was led by Evan Melvin with 12 points.

Brent Ransbottom had all six of his points in the first quarter as Chesapeake took an 18-9 lead.

Stapleton, Rase and Shoemaker scored six points each in the second quarter as the Panthers scored 29 points and built a 47-22 halftime cushion.

Porter exploded for 11 points in the third quarter as Chesapeake pulled away to a 62-29 lead.

Stapleton scored eight more points in the fourth quarter.

Coal Grove plays Portsmouth West at 6:15 p.m. Tuesday in the sectional tournament at Rock Hill High School.

The Coal Grove-West winner plays Chesapeake at 6 p.m. Friday.
