Carry-out destroyed in early morning blaze

PERRY TOWNSHIP — A fire destroyed the U.S. 52 Carry-out in Perry Township early Friday morning.

Perry Township Volunteer Fire Department Chief Dewey Derifield said the 911 calls came in after 3 a.m.

Derifield said when firefighters arrived on the scene at 3:10 a.m., the building “was probably 50 percent involved and it had already burnt through the roof. It was a hot fire and it was going really good.

“There was nothing we could do for the building,” he added. “It was too far gone.”

Derifield said he didn’t know of a cause for the fire when he left for work at 6 a.m.

“It was still burning when I left so we couldn’t go inside and get a look at it,” he said. He was also unsure who owned the property.

“So we haven’t talked to them about when they closed or if they were having any problems with anything,” he said.

Derifield said that because of the building’s concrete block walls and tin roof, he expected fire to flare up and burn throughout the day.

“That type of construction holds in a lot of heat,” he said.

Perry Township received assistance from the Burlington-Fayette, Coal Grove and Upper Township volunteer fire departments.

“They provided water for us because we don’t have any hydrants in that area,” Derifield said.

The investigation into the cause of the fire is ongoing.

The carryout is at the intersection of U.S. 52 and Central Avenue, near the Country Hearth Inn.

Sobriety checkpoint planned in Scioto Co.

PORTSMOUTH — Several law enforcement agencies in the area are looking to crack down on drunk drivers this weekend.

The Scioto County Sheriff’s Office, Ohio State Highway Patrol’s Portsmouth post and the Portsmouth Police Department will set up a sobriety checkpoint Saturday evening to intercept impaired drivers.

Capt. John Murphy of the Scioto County Sheriff’s Office said that officers will be conducting a roadside check of drivers for alcohol and drug impairment.

The exact location of the checkpoint will be announced Saturday morning.

Woman attempts to slip drugs into state prison

FRANKLIN FURNACE — A Franklin Furance woman arrested for illegal drug conveyance was scheduled to appear in Lebanon Municipal Court today after Ohio State Highway Patrol Troopers arrested her Thursday for

attempting to bring drugs into the Lebanon Correctional Institute.

Donna Lee Arthur, 56, was charged with attempted to convey drugs onto the grounds of a detention facility, a third-degree felony; and possession of crack cocaine, a fifth-degree felony.

Rotary honors two as Paul Harris Fellows

The Ironton Rotary Club added two members to an honored group.

The most recent Paul Harris Award recipients are Gloria Chrismer and club President Bret Hensley. The club now has 52 PHF’s.
