The 2010 Appalachian Uprising music festival kicks off today.

The three-day festival that’s held on Eden Valley Farm in Scottown will feature bands Cadillac Sky, J D Crowe, John Cowan, John McEuen, Sam Bush, The Grascals and several others.

Farm owner Steve Cielec described the music as a mix of bluegrass and newgrass, a term that describes a contemporary style of bluegrass.

“We try to have something for everyone,” Cielec said. “Our slogan is bluegrass for the next generation.”

This is the ninth year for the music festival. Cielec expects to host 5,000 to 6,000 people, including many who will camp out on the 500-plus acre farm.

He said the best part of the festival has been getting to know the people.

“They come from all over the country and you make new friends,” Cielec said. “It’s the ninth year and the crowds have grown a lot over the years. You have people that have been coming all nine years. It makes you feel good that you’re doing something that people enjoy.”

Besides the music, the festival will feature vendors selling ethnic food as well as some with barbecue and funnels cakes. Other vendors will sell crafts.

There is no rain date for the festival, which will continue rain or shine.

“The show goes on,” Cielec said. “We have a big canopy tent for people to sit under. It’s good even in the heat.”

Tickets will be available at the gate for $100 for all three days and $30 for one day.

“Bring your own lawn chair and be prepared to have a good time,” Cielec said.
