COAL GROVE— Dane Haukedahl was all washed up, you might say, after his Saturday night gig.

The 16-year-old Coal Grove guy spent the evening at the dunking booth at the Coal Grove Family Fun Days — actually, he spent the evening in the dunking booth, raising money for Coal Grove Little League football.

While folks took turns trying to dunk him, others strolled the booths in search of a Bahama Mama or an Orangeaid.

Still others pulled up a chair to listen to the entertainment. Cindy Pauley drives a bus for Dawson-Bryant schools. She chauffeurs Katie Owens to school each day when classes are in session, so she came Saturday evening to hear Katie sing and she brought her mother-in-law, Ruby Pauley.

“I’ve heard here before,” Cindy Pauley said of Owens. “She’s really good.”

Alicia Corvin of Coal Grove brought her brother, Ryan and her five-year-old nephew, Will Sites.

“We came out to have fun and to hear Kelly (Grieco) sing,” Alicia Corvin said. “We’ve been coming eight or nine years. People with kids, this is where they come.”

Perhaps one of the activities that drew the most interest was the Chinese auction. People lined up to pay $1 a chance, then stuck their hand in a partially covered bucket to hopefully find a winning ticket among dozens of blank ones. The numbered tickets corresponded to gift baskets lined up on tables.

Gina Robinson, of Coal Grove, said she wasn’t picky, any basket would be lovely if she could just get her hand on a winning ticket.

Chuck Cooper of Ironton was luckier. He walked away with a basket of collectible cars. Juelda Collins, of Coal Grove, was luckier still. She left with a basket under each arm. One had baby items, the other was a “Red Hat Ladies” collection.

“I don’t know what I’m going to do,” Collins mused. “I don’t have a baby and I don’t know anyone having a baby.”

The annual Family Fun Days at Paul Porter Park is sponsored by the Coal Grove Betterment Club.

This year’s proceeds will be used to construct a new building to store village decorations and other items. Activities will continue through Monday evening at 10 p.m., when the grand finale — a fireworks show — begins.
