PEDRO — Nate Davenport’s decision was going to be either a slam dunk or a home run.

He went with the long ball.

The Rock Hill Redmen senior two-sport standout had to decide between a college baseball or basketball career. He went with baseball and signed a letter-of-intent with Cedarville University.

“I tossed around both sports. I’ve played both my whole life and I’ve enjoyed both. I enjoy sports,” said Davenport.

There was offers to play basketball at Shawnee State, and to play basketball or both sports at Cedarville.

“I decided early that I was going to play basketball, but then I visited Cedarville and talked with coach Manes and I changed my whole perspective,” said Davenport.

“Something was drawing me to Cedarville and I can only explain it as God.”

Yellow Jackets head coach Mike Manes is looking for a big rookie season from his latest recruit. He said Davenport should get at least 200 at bats.

“We’re looking for players who could come in and play right out of high school,” said Manes. “(Davenport) is only going to get stronger and faster. I think he’s going to have a fabulous freshman year.”

Manes said Davenport may end up at first base due to his 6-foot-5 frame, but “we have several options. He’s a good athlete.”

Davenport said it doesn’t matter what position he plays.

“I’m most comfortable at first base, but I don’t mind playing another position,” said Davenport.

Davenport said he is undecided on a major but is leaning toward political science or education.

“They have great academics. I’m going to play baseball, but I’m going to get a degree,” said Davenport. “I’ve had a lot of support from my teammates here in basketball and baseball and that’s made it easy.”
