Ironton’s bats rings out in win over Pointers, 12-3

With apologies to Julie Andrews, the hills of Southeast Ohio could hear the Ironton bats on Thursday as the Fighting Tigers banged out 13 hits in a 12-3 Ohio Valley Conference win over the Gallipolis Blue Devils.

Ironton (7-0, 4-0) has 39 hits over their past 3 games which have all been wins over OVC opponents.

“The kids played well and hit well again,” said Ironton coach John Hunt.

“Not trying to do too much and working hard for solid barrels putting it in play. Ian (Ginger) has been on fire of late.”

in to lead a 13-hit attack for Ironton. Tanner Kleinman was 2-4 with 2 RBI, Nick Sites 2-3 with a double and RBI, Jacob Hughes 2-4 with a double and 2 RBI, Braydon Baker 2-4 with an RBI and Tyler Roach was 1-4.

Baker went 5 innings to get the win as he gave up 7 hits, 3 earned runs with 5 strikeouts and 2 walks. Hughes finished and gave up 2 hits with 2 strikeouts and no walks.

After a scoreless first inning, Ironton got 6 runs in the second.

Ginger and Hughes singled, Kleinman hit into a fielder’s choice, Carson Freeman and Ethan Sutton were both safe on an errors, Bryson Kerns walked, Roach was safe on an error and Baker had RBI single.

Gallipolis (1-6, 1-2) answered with 3 runs in the bottom of the inning on 2 walks and hits by Nathan Shockey, Young and Beckett Camden.

The Fighting Tigers made it 9-3 in the top of the third/

Ginger singled, stole second and scored on a double by Hughes. Kleinman singled, Freeman reached on an error, Sutton hit into a force play and Sites doubled.

Ironton scored 2 more run-in the fourth on singles by Roach, Ginger and Kleinman.

The final Ironton run scored in the sixth when Baker singled and Ginger doubled.

Camden and Shockey were 2-3 for the Dragons.

Heath Champlin went 5 innings in taking the loss.
