Five dead from carbon monoxide in Gallia County

CLAY TOWNSHIP —Five people, found dead on Tuesday at a Gallia County residence succumbed to carbon monoxide poisoning according to Gallia County Sheriff Matt Champlin.

At about 10:44 a.m. Tuesday, the Gallia County 911 Center received a call of five unresponsive individuals inside a residence on State Route 7 South in Clay Township.

Upon the arrival of emergency personnel, it was confirmed that the five residents were dead.

In a press release, Champlin said that at this time, there is no suspicion of foul play.

“We have arrived at a preliminary determination in regards to the deceased bodies of five individuals who were located this morning by a family member at their residence on State Route 7 South in Clay Township,” Champlin said. “Based upon our investigation and the determination made by the Gallia County coroner, it has been found that these individuals perished as a result of an exposure to carbon monoxide gas inside of their residence.”

Two of the residents were identified as Brian A. Doss, 35, and Lora Schuman, 34. The other three who perished were children.

The sheriff added that although investigators have reached certain conclusions at this point, the investigation remains open as they seek “further details surrounding the events of this tragedy.”

Champlin called on the community to keep the family of those lost in their thoughts.

“As I requested earlier, please continue to lift this family and our community up in prayer,” he said. “This situation is one that we all hope will never occur. Today’s tragic loss of life has shattered and changed the lives of many forever.”
