CHILLICOTHE — Ty Cobb is often credited with the saying “One swing of the bat can change the world.”
Well, those words from the baseball legend still have meaning today,
Saint Joseph found themselves trailing by 8 runs in the second inning. But one swing of the bat set the Flyers off on a 6-run rally in the third and that momentum carried them to a 19-11 comeback win over the Tolsia Rebels on Friday night at a chilly Veterans Memorial Stadium.
“We dug ourselves a big hole in that second inning, but the kids really showed some grit to fight back,” said Flyers interim coach Nick Medinger.
Both teams had no trouble swinging the bat as they combined for 21 hits and 24 RBIs.
Carson Willis was 2-4, including a double in the fifth inning and drove in three runs.
Landon Rowe was 2-4 with an RBI, Beckham Waginger went 2-4 with an RBI, Evan Aldridge went 2-5 with 2 RBIs, Carter Johnson went 2-3, Ian Whaley went 1-4 with 2 RBIs, and Blake Medinger went 1-2 with a fifth inning double and 2 RBIs. Wesley Neal and Carson Lyons each notched RBIs.
Trevor Copley went 2-4 and had a game-high 4 RBIs. Brody Caudill and Luke Williamson also had a pair of hits to headline the offense for Tolsia (2-9).
But the swing that changed the momentum of the game came from the bat of Johnson, who ripped a 1-1 pitch back up the middle to lead off the bottom of the third inning.
Johnson later scored on a wild pitch.
Then Rowe picked up an infield single and reached third on a throwing error. Waginger ripped a single into left field to score Rowe, and Aldridge single one back up the middle to bring home Waginger. Aldridge and Neal would also score in the inning to cut the deficit to 9-7.
The Rebels were able to build up their big lead by drawing 5 walks in the second and getting hits from Caudill, Bray Mollette, and Copley.
Caudill had two hits in the inning, including a triple down the right field line that scored Copley to make it 8-1. Caudill scored on a wild pitch a batter later.
Saint Joseph (2-3) finally took the lead for good in the fifth inning with a 12-run rally.
Medinger lined a full count pitch into left field for a double that scored Whaley and Johnson to give the Flyers a 12-11 lead.
The Flyers added 7 more runs in the inning to take a 19-11 lead into the top of the sixth.
Lyons struck out four of the final eight batters he faced and didn’t give up a hit to close out the game for the win.
Rowe got his first start for the Flyers but found himself in a jam during the second. Lyons came on in relief and closed out the game to earn the win as he gave up 7 hits, 3 earned runs and fanned 6 batters in 5.2 innings of work.
