EDITORIAL: Reaching a historic milestone

On Sunday, the Lawrence County Museum opened for the season, and it is a particularly important one for them.

This year marks 100 years since the founding of the Lawrence County Historical Society, which runs the museum.

The Historic Society is a great resource to Ironton and Lawrence County, with its volunteers working to preserve local history, not just through their collection of artifacts at the museum, but also through the events they organize throughout the year.

Each fall, the Historic Cemetery Walk takes place at Woodland Cemetery in Ironton, organized by the Historic Society, with many from the community, including museum staff, dressing up as a notable figure buried there.

The walk is an immensely popular event, drawing hundreds each year, and offers a crash course on Lawrence County, with stories of famed aviator Col. Bill Lambert, ironmaster Nannie Kelly Wright, Waterloo Wonders coach Magellen Hairston and many others being recounted.

And each December, to kick off the Christmas season, the Historic Society also organizes the Historic Church Walk, which takes visitors to several of the churches in downtown Ironton that have served generations as houses of worship and community circles.

These are but two of the offerings from the Historic Society and the museum itself offers many one-off and regular events throughout their season.

What began as an effort to collect local history now has a heft bit of history of its own.

We congratulate the staff of the Historic Society on the milestone and look forward to what they have planned for the coming year.
