AID— The storms might have come and gone through the Ohio Valley, but the Symmes Valley bats poured out 16 hits on Wednesday evening and the Vikings defeated the Western Indians 17-0 in 5 innings in a Southern Ohio Conference matchup.
The Vikings offense was paced by senior Will Jones, who racked up 4 RBIs and collected 3 hits — including a triple in the third inning to give the Vikings a double-digit lead.
Two batters went perfect at the plate as well. Tanner Thompson finished 4-for-4 and 2 RBIs and Tanner Corn went 3-for-3 and an RBI.
Braden Hankins picked up the win with a 1-hit shutout in just 57 pitches. Hankins struck out 7 batters in the game — including 2 of the final 3 outs give the Vikings the run-rule win. Outside of the hit, Western managed just 2 base runners the rest of the way.
Western (0-3, 0-2) managed their lone hit of the game in the first, when Tanner Kerns led the game off with a base hit into left field and reached second on an error. But Hankins shut down the scoring threat, fanning the next two batters and getting Wyatt Henderson to fly out to Thompson to end the inning.
Symmes Valley (3-1, 1-1) wasted little time getting on the scoreboard, getting singles from Thompson, Jones and Corn in the bottom frame to help the Vikings jump out to a 3-0 lead.
The Vikings added 5 more in the second inning.
In the bottom of the third, Symmes Valley blew the game wide open with 6-consecutive hits to highlight the inning.
Thompson led the inning off with a single. Then Jones slapped a triple into left to drive home Thompson and Bronx Carpenter to make it 11-0. Andy Strow followed with a single to drive home Jones.
A single from both Corn and Asher Maynard loaded up the bases, allowing Hankins to single into right and drive home two runs to give the Vikings a 14-0 lead.
Wes Satterfield took the loss for Western, registering 6 strikeouts in 2 and 1/3 innings of work. Chase Ware came in relief during the third inning to finish out the game.
Carpenter finished 1-4 at the plate with an RBI, Strow went 2-4 and an RBI, and Maynard went 1-3, Hankins went 1-4 and drove in 2 runs, and Jackson Fields went 1-3.
