Seven schools host dance competition

More than 200 participants took part in the second annual Tri-State Dance Alliance Dance & Twirl Competition on March 15.

“It was our largest competition yet,” Carmen Mitzi Sinnott, one of the organizers, said. “It was double the size we had last year.

Participating studios in the event included Cyndi’s Dance Studio, of Ironton;  Dance with Hope, of Grayson, Kentucky; Nancy’s School of Dance, in Huntington/Proctorville; Yvonne DeKay School of Dance, in Ironton; Studio 301, in Chesapeake; The Inez Dance Academy, in Inez, Kentucky; and Ohio River Dance.

The event began with a baton competition in the school’s gymnasium and moved on to a dance completion, starting at noon.

Overall, more than 600 people came to watch the event, Sinnott said.

“We had a great, full house the whole day in the gym and the theater,” she said. “We had people all day, from grandmas to great aunts to babies. It was great for everyone to see how artistic and creative people are in the Tri-State.”

Sinnott said categories included jazz, lyrical, hip-hop, ballet and baton twirling.

Organized said the Tri-State Dance Alliance was born out of a shared desire to make dance competitions more accessible to families, rather than out of state events with high entrance fees.
