Plenty of offense highlights OVC basketball all-star games

PROCTORVILLE — Offense is always the name of the game when the Ohio Valley Conference holds its annual all-star games.

There was plenty of offense in both the girls and boys games when the teams squared off on Tuesday. The girls’ team coached by Mike Hughes beat the team coached by his daughter Amy Hughes 79-68.

The boys game was not only high-scoring but exciting down to the final second as the boys’ team coached by Nathan Speed edged the Steven After coached team 128-127.

Portsmouth’s K.K. Mays was one of three players in double figures for Mike Hughes team as she scored 13 points and was named the game’s Most Valuable Player. Coal Grove’s Jenna Anson had 11 points and Ironton’s Lola Hankins scored 10.

Portsmouth’s Keke Woods had 21 points, Fairland’s Kamryn Barnitz had 14 and Coal Grove’s Emma Lively 12 for Amy Hughes’s team.

Each boys’ team had seven players in double figures with Coal Grove’s Owen Johnson scoring 17 points for Nathan Speed’s team and being named the game’s MVP.

Also in double figures for Speed’s team were Ironton’s Bryce Markins with15 and Braden Schreck 13, Portsmouth’s Jayden Brewer and Rock Hill’s Rylan Barker 14 each, and Chesapeake’s Ethan Kerns had 11 points and Kaden Perkins 10.

For Ater’s team, Chesapeake’s Maddox Kazee scored 21 points and teammate Karson Frecka had 19, Fairland Brody Buchanan 13 and Keegan Smith 11, Portsmouth’s Daequan Woods 11, and Gallipolis’ Cade Mock 12 and Ty Reed 10.

In the 3-point contest, Barnitz won the girls’ event and Fairland’s Austin Kujac won the boys’ contest.

Mock won the dunking contest.
