ROME TOWNSHIP — On Thursday, students at Fairland East Elementary School got a treat from a group of special visitors.

Residents of the Wyngate at RiversEdge, along with some staff members of the senior living community, made a stop in the school’s first grade classrooms, as part of Read Across America Week.

Each of the classroom visitors sat in and read a Dr. Seuss book to the gathered students.

Read Across America is a celebration of reading across the U.S. that takes place each year at the beginning of March. The National Education Association created the program to celebrate the March 2 birthday of children’s author Dr. Seuss and many schools theme their events to his works.

Amber Carpenter, activities director of the Wyngate, said the group makes regular visits to the schools, usually visiting with kindergarten classrooms and reading to the children.

Carpenter said the program is made possible by Cheryl Fuller, the resident manager of the Wyngate, and Jennifer Graham, Fairland East’s principal, who she said is always welcoming and accommodating to the Wyngate’s ideas they bring to the students.
