The city, county and region were quite proud when the Ironton High School Fighting Tigers defeated Liberty Center in December to win the Division V state title, the third in the school’s history and their first in 35 years.

But, in following weeks, the members of that team have shown even more reasons for the community to take pride in them.

In January, when the region was paralyzed by Winter Storm Blair, which brought several inches of snow and a hard layer of ice to the city, the he team went to work.

While schools and many workplaces were still closed, the players set out and went around the city, volunteering to shovel driveways and assist those in need.

And, last week, their citizenship was on display yet again.

At the time a fire broke out at South Third Street in Ironton, five members of the team left a school dance and came upon the scene, where their assistant coach, Chris Prater was fighting the blaze.

They asked Prater what they could do to help and then assisted in dragging a hose to a hydrant and pushing a hose forward for firefighters.

Firefighters made sure the players were in no danger and well away from the fire itself, but appreciated the assistance.

These acts show that these players not only excel on the field, but have a deep commitment to their community.

It is a testament to their character, as well as the mentoring they have received from families, coaches and teachers.

We commend them on a job well done.
