HUNTINGTON, W.Va. –Marshall Football learned of its official 2025 schedule on Friday following its release from the Sun Belt Conference and ESPN.

The Thundering Herd will play six home games, highlighted by a pair of Sun Belt Conference games at Joan C. Edwards Stadium – the Oct. 11 Homecoming contest against Old Dominion and a Nov. 8 contest against James Madison, which will serve as the ‘75’ game.

“We are excited to have our schedule for the 2025 season so fans can make plans to support the Herd,” Marshall Football coach Tony Gibson said. “Marshall has always been one of the toughest places to play in college football and I look forward to leading our team out onto the field this fall. We need every fan to step up, get tickets and fill ‘The Joan’ as we get this thing going!”

Marshall is coming off a 2024 Sun Belt Conference Championship season in which the team went 10-3 and ended the season on a seven-game win streak that culminated with a 31-3 win over Louisiana in the 2024 Hercules Tires Sun Belt Conference Football Championship Game at Cajun Field in Lafayette, Louisiana.

The Herd will look to continue that success under first-year head coach Tony Gibson, the West Virginia native who brings new energy and a new staff, along with 60+ new players to the Marshall roster for the 2025 season.

Marshall opens its 2025 season on the road at SEC power Georgia on Aug. 30, marking the Herd’s second trip to Sanford Stadium. The first came in 2004 when the Herd took the No. 3 Bulldogs to the wire in a 13-3 loss.

In addition to the Homecoming and ‘75’ Game announcements, other game themes for the 2025 season were revealed on Friday by Marshall Athletics.

Marshall’s home opener comes on Sept. 6 when Missouri State comes to Joan C. Edwards Stadium for the “We Are … Marshall” game. The Bears will be in their first game as a member of Conference USA and visiting Huntington for the first time.

The following week, Marshall is also at home when Eastern Kentucky makes the 2-hour trek down I-64 to take on the Herd in the annual “We Are … Thankful For Heroes” contest in which Marshall shows its appreciation to service personnel.

Marshall wraps up non-conference action on Sept. 20 at Middle Tennessee before starting SBC play at Louisiana’s Cajun Field – the same place the Herd earned its 2024 SBC Championship. Marshall opens league play against the Ragin’ Cajuns on Sept. 27.

Following the Herd’s first bye week of the season, Marshall hosts Homecoming 2025 on Oct. 11 when Old Dominion comes to Huntington. Stay tuned for more updates on Homecoming 2025 as we Helmet Stripe The Joan for this game. Details will be announced in the future.

Marshall’s Homecoming contest is the first of two consecutive home dates in October as Texas State plays its first-ever game in the state of West Virginia on Oct. 18 in the “We Are … Herd Strong” game.

The Herd’s second bye week precedes an anticipated nationally-televised Thursday contest at Coastal Carolina on Oct. 30.

Following that contest against the Chanticleers, Marshall returns home for the annual “We Are … Playing for the ‘75’” Game against James Madison on Nov. 8. That game serves as the closest home date to the anniversary of the Nov. 14, 1970 plane crash of Southern Airways Flight 932, which killed all 75 persons aboard, including 37 members of the Marshall Football team, as the flight traveled back from Marshall’s 17-14 loss to East Carolina. To this day, it is still the greatest air tragedy in sports history.

Consecutive road games continue the November portion of the schedule with contests at Georgia State (Nov. 15) and App State (Nov. 22) proving crucial in the SBC East title race.

Marshall will take the field at Joan C. Edwards Stadium one final time in the 2025 regular season on Nov 29 when the team hosts Georgia Southern for Senior Day festivities.

Times and television considerations for the 2025 season will be released by the Sun Belt Conference and ESPN later this spring.
