Defense keys Pointers tournament win over Trojans

SOUTH POINT — This one was all about the defense.

The South Point Pointers used a strong defensive effort to shut down the Portsmouth Trojans and post a 49-30 Division 5 district tournament win on Friday.
Brayden Hanshaw scored 17 points and Ethan Layne made four 3-pointers for 12 points to lead the Pointers who held Portsmouth to single digit scoring in two different quarters.
The Pointers (12-10) will play Minford at 6 p.m. Monday at the Waverly Downtown Arena.
Malachi Loper hit a trey and scored 8 points as Portsmouth took an 11-10 first quarter lead.

Hanshaw had 4 points, Landon Vance was 3 of 4 at the foul line and Ethan Hunt hit a 3-pointer to account for South Point’s total.
Layne drained a pair of 3-pointers and Hanshaw scored 4 points as the Pointers rallied to take a 22-17 lead at the break.

The Pointers then played shut down defense in the third quarter as they held the Trojans to just two points and extended their lead to 30-19.
Hunt hit another 3-pointer and had 5 of the 8 points for South Point. Dae’quan Woods was 2 of 2 at the foul line for Portsmouth’s points in the quarter.
South Point began to pull away in the fourth quarter by outscoring the Trojans 19-11.
Hanshaw hit a trifecta and scored 9 points and Layne nailed two more 3-pointers in the quarter.
Connie Thomas hit a pair of 3-pointers and scored all 9 of his points in the quarter while Loper added two foul shots.
Loper scored 10 points and Thomas 9 to lead the Trojans (7-15).
