Burlington students celebrate 100th, 1,000th day of school

BURLINGTON — Wednesday was a special day for two sets of classes, who bookend the student body at Burlington Elementary School.

For the school’s three classes of kindergarten students, it was their 100th day of school since starting the academic year.

And, for the school’s three fifth grade classes, it marked their 1,000th day of school.

Both the kindergartners and fifth graders came together that morning in the school’s cafeteria to mark the occasion, and take part in a series of challenges.

Diane Lawson, kindergarten teacher at the school, said 10 events were organized, and timed around 100 seconds.

Students found out how many jumping jacks they could do in 100 seconds, as well as how many words they could write, how many times they could lick a lollipop and other activities in the same time frame.

Students first estimated what they thought they could do, then found out what they could actually accomplish.

The kindergartners continued activities throughout the day, working on coloring assignments around the milestone, as well as dressing up for the occasion.

The festivities continued on Thursday at the school, kindergarten teacher Brandi Neal said, with first graders celebrating the 101st day of the school year, along with fifth graders celebrating their 1,001st.
