You can almost hear Dove Cameron and Cheyenne Jackson singing, “When push comes to shove do what you gotta do.”
With the South Point Pointers trying to inflict their will on the pace of the game, the Ironton Fighting Tigers were able to fight through it and pull away to a 63-49 Ohio Valley Conference win on Friday.
“That’s what you have to do. They try to make you play the way they want. Once you get a double digit lead, then they have to play faster,” said Ironton coach Chris Barnes.
The Pointers had the pace they wanted for most of the first half but Ironton was able to turn the tables in the second half.
“We changed some things and did a better job with their 3-point shooters. Ashton (Lyne) had a big game. I told him at halftime that we needed a big second half,” said Barnes.
“Bryce (Markins) hit some shots and Tyler (Roach) hit some big shots. That’s two games in a row he’s played well so we’re hoping he’s coming around. And Braden (Schreck) became a facilitator and did a great job all-around.”
Brayden Hanshaw gave the Pointers a 6-4 lead as he scored around 3-pointers by Judah Barnes and Markins.
Ironton (9-5, 8-2) finally took the lead at 11-9 on a 3-pointer by Roach but Hanshaw answered with his own trey to put the Pointers back on top.
Roach and Schreck hit back-to-back 3-pointers as Ironton took the lead for good at 17-12 and Schreck had a steal and layup for a 19-12 lead.
Davon Lewis hit a 3-pointer to get South Point within 1915 at the end of the quarter.
Hanshaw scored early in the second quarter and no one scored again until Markins hit a 3-pointer with under three minutes left in the half and it was 24-17.
Hanshaw had a pair of short range baskets and it was 24-21 but Schreck’s runner in the lane just before the buzzer gave the Fighting Tigers a 26-21 lead at the break.
Markins hit a 3-pointer at the start of the second half only to have Ethan Layne get a putback for the Pointers and it was 29-23.
Ashton Layne then drilled a 3-pointer and powered his way to the basket for a layup and the lead was now 34-23.
Roach hit a 15-footer, Schreck made a layup and Markel Cotton’s layup gave Ironton its biggest lead at 43-28.
A free throw by Ethan Hunt just before the end of the quarter made it 43-29.
Davon Lewis made two layups to start the fourth quarter and the Pointers trailed just 43-33.
Roach ended the short run with a 17-footer as Ironton went up 45-33.
Hanshaw scored yet again to make it 48-37, but Layne had a pair of 3-point plays and a layup off a nice pass from Schreck and it was 54-37.
Roach hit a 3-pointer, Hanshsaw got a putback to make it 59-40 but then Kieron Jenkins and Maddix Markel had layups as Ironton now held a comfortable 63-40 lead.
Layne had 17 points, 5 rebounds and 2 blocks to pace Ironton. Schreck scored 12 points to go with 7 rebounds and 4 assists. Roach scored 13 points and Markins finished with 9 points on three 3-pointers.
Hanshaw led all scorers with 29 points for the Pointers (6-10, 4-7).
‘The next thing we have to do is work on guarding the post,” said Barnes. “Kudos to Hanshaw today, He had a career day.”
Lewis finished with 8 points and Hunt had 7.
