The Ironton Fighting Tigers set a school record with 17 3-point goals as they cruised past the Portsmouth Trojans 84-40 in an Ohio Valley Conference game on Friday.

Braden Schreck led all scorers with 28 points including 5 of 5 from 3-point range. Bryce Markins and Carson Freeman both hit three 3-pointers, Maddix Markel and Keiron Jenkins hit a pair of 3-pointers while Tyler Roach and Markel Cotton hit one each.

“We were finally at home and we shot the ball well. You should shoot the ball better at home,” said Ironton coach Chris Barnes.

Braden shot the ball fantastic. That’s the best I’ve seen him shoot.

“We played really good defense again and it was nice to share the ball. Markel Cotton has really become a defensive stopper for us. I hope he can keep that up.”

Ironton (7-4, 6-1) shot 31 of 59 from the floor for 52.5 percent including 17 of 33 from beyond the arc for 51.5 percent.

Portsmouth (6-9, 3-5) was 15 of 46 from the field for 32.6 percent and 5 of 18 from 3-point range for 27.8 percent.

Portsmouth took its first lead against Ironton in the two games when Brewer had a tip-in and it was 6-5.

But Ironton went on a 14-0 run with Schreck scoring 11 of the points and it was 19-6.

A 3-pointer by Landon Malone had Portsmouth down 19-11, but Schreck buried a trifecta just before the buzzer and Ironton led 22-11.

A steal by Roach led to a Schreck layup and then a steal by Freeman enabled Schreck to score again and it was 26-11 to start the second quarter.

Jayden Brewer’s layup stopped the run but Freeman hit a pair of 3-pointers and Roach knocked down a 13-foot and a layup as Ironton built a 36-16 lead.

Brewer sank two foul shots but Schreck hit a triple and Markins followed with two more 3-pointers and it was 45-18.

Freeman banked in a 3-pointer and Markel had a putback and Ironton led 50-23 at the half.

Schreck came out and hit a 3-pointer and two free throws to start the second half and Ashton Layne had back-to-back layups as Ironton went up 59-23.

Dae’quan Woods had a layup for the only Portsmouth basket of the quarter making it 59-25.

Markel hit a 15-foot, Freeman had a layup and Kayden Edwards a free throw to end the quarter and it was 64-25.

The Fighting Tigers opened the fourth quarter with a 3-pointer by Roach and two by Markel and the lead was 73-27.

Barnes emptied his bench starting at the end of the third quarter and Jenkins hit a pair of 3-pointers in the fourth quarter as Ironton won going away.

Freeman finished with 11 points, Markel scored 10 and Markins 9. Layne had 6 rebounds and 3 blocks, and Schreck 4 rebounds and 5 steals,

Ironton had 25 assists with Judah Barnes dishing out 6. Freeman had 4 while Schreck, Markins and Roach had 3 each.

Woods scored 17 points for the Trojans.
