Vance resigns as Ohio U.S. senator

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Vice President-Elect JD Vance announced his resignation as Ohio’s U.S. senator on Thursday.

Vance, who was elected in November on the Republican ticket with Donald Trump, issued a statement regarding his resignation.

“To the people of Ohio, I extend my heartfelt gratitude for the privilege of representing you in the United States Senate,” he said. “When I was elected to this office, I promised to never forget where I came from, and I’ve made sure to live by that promise every single day.”

Vance turned in a resignation letter to Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine. The governor will appoint a successor to fill the seat. 

Vance’s resignation became effective at midnight Friday.
