Walter Ray Depriest, 72, of Pedro, passed away Monday, Jan. 13, 2025, at KDMC, Ashland, Kentucky.
Walter was born May 10, 1952, in Lawrence County, a son of the late Walter Depriest and Darlene (Kerns) Depriest.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 49 years, Kathy Louise (Markel) Depriest, whom he married June 11, 1971.
Walter was a graduate of Rock Hill High School.
He retired from the electrical maintenance department of AK Steel and was a former employer at Lone Star Cement Company and Dayton Malleable.
He was a former member of Mount Calvary Freewill Baptist Church, where he served as the choir leader for many years, he especially loved being able to sing with his wife.
He currently was a member of William’s Creek Independent Church in Ashland, Kentucky.
Walter Ray loved making his own knifes, telling stories and watching old western movies.
In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Wade Depriest, Davie Depriest and Jeff Depriest.
Those left to cherish his memory are his three sons, Adam Depriest, Garrett (Tiffany) Depriest and Brandon (Linzy) Depriest; grandchildren, Rylie (Jake) Schwab, Elijah, Nolin, Marlea, Grayden, Nathan, Niah and Brittany (Matt) Dillon; great-grandchildren, Zoey and Braxton Dalton and Hudson Schwab; nieces and nephews, Jared (Sara) Redmond, Miranda Guy and Keri (Nick) Patton; and many other nieces, nephews, and extended family members and friends. Also, survived by Milton Depriest and Gary (Molly) Depriest and three sisters, Diane Bowles, Sandra Johnson and Vivian (Darrel) McFann; and two sister-in-laws, Kelli Depriest and Edith Depriest.
Funeral service will be 1 p.m. Friday at Phillips Funeral Home, 1004 S. Seventh St., Ironton, with his son Brandon Depriest and Brother Dave Schug officiating. Burial will follow in Mud Hollow Cemetery, 371 Township Road 41-N, Pedro.
Visitation for family and friends will be Friday, 11 a.m. until time of the service at the funeral home.
