June Gagai

Aug. 28, 1931–Jan. 8, 2025

June Frances Gagai, born Aug. 28, 1931, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, Jan. 8, 2025, at age 93.

June was the daughter of the late George and Elizabeth Hortel.

She was preceded in death by her sisters, Ruth Murnahan and Carol Hill; and her son, Andy.

She was also preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, Andy.

June graduated from St. Joseph High School in 1948 and was a lifetime member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church. June was a long-time member of St. Joe Catholic Women’s Club, and the mixed and women’s choirs.

June was retired from Briggs Lawrence County Library.

June was an original member of Sta-Tan Pool, where she joined in 1960 and was a member until its closing in 2017, the only person to do so.

She loved playing cards with her “cronies” and playing slots at the casino, never betting more than a quarter.

June is survived by her three sons, George (Linda), John (Sheila), and David; also her daughter-in-law; Brenda. June leaves behind five grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren.

A funeral mass will be held noon Friday at St. Joseph Church, 905 S. Fifth St., Ironton. Visitation will begin at 11 a.m. until time of the mass.

Due to weather/icy conditions at Calvary Cemetery, burial will be held at a later date.

The family request that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made in June’s name to St. Joseph High School or St. Joseph Catholic Church, 905 S. Fifth St., Ironton, Ohio 45638.
