COLUMBUS — In accordance with the orders issued by U.S. President Joe Biden, in honor of the life and service of former President James Earl Carter, Jr., Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine has ordered that the flags of the United States and the State of Ohio shall be flown at half-staff upon all public buildings and grounds throughout state for a period of 30 days from the day of his death.
The flags shall remain lowered until sunset on Jan. 28, 2025.
Carter, the nation’s 39th president, died Dec. 29, 2024 at age 100.
DeWine also paid his respects to Carter in a statement.
“Fran and I are saddened to hear of the death of former President Jimmy Carter,” he said. “President Carter lived his faith through his public life, and he had one of the most impactful post-presidencies in American history. He dedicated his life to humanitarian work, including the building of housing through Habitat for Humanity, for which he became synonymous. He founded the Carter Center to support democracy and fight disease across the globe.”
DeWine also spoke of Carter’s military service and his long marriage.
“President Carter was a member of our Greatest Generation, and was awarded the World War II victory medal, among others, for his service in the United States Navy,” DeWine said. “President Carter was our longest living ex-president, and he and the late first lady Rosalynn were the longest-married presidential couple in history, having celebrated their 77th wedding anniversary. Fran and I extended our sincerest condolences to President Carter’s children Jack, James, Donnel, and Amy, and his many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.”
