Local author Seaton dies at 83

HUNTINGTON, WEST VIRGINIA — Carter Taylor Seaton, an accomplished and prolific author of the Tri-State, died Monday at age 83.

Seaton, of Huntington, was the author of five nonfiction works and four novels, beginning as an author in 2003.

A graduate of Marshall University with a degree in English and business, Seaton directed a rural Appalachian craft cooperative to benefit low-income women from 1971-1984 and was nominated by Ladies Home Journal in 1975 for its “Woman of the Year” award.

She worked as marketing director for Goodwill Industries of KYOWVA Area, retiring in 2013.

Seaton was approached by former U.S. Rep. Ken Hechler, D-West Virginia, who also served as West Virginia Secretary of State and a White House advisor, as he approached his 100th birthday to write his biography. The result was the book, “Rebel in the Red Jeep,” which detailed Hechler’s long career, working alongside such figures as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and President Harry Truman.

Seaton held an Alumni Award of Distinction from Marshall’s College of Liberal Arts, the West Virginia Library Association’s Literary Merit Award, an Ella Dickey Award for Literary Merit and the Governor’s Award for Lifetime Achievement in the Arts.

She also held a Tamarack Foundation Fellowship Award for Lifetime Achievement in the Arts.

Seaton was the cover story on the first issue of Tri-State Living, published by The Ironton Tribune, in 2010. She was a 2023 Huntington Wall of Fame Inductee.

Her final book, “Wednesday’s Child: A Life Story,” a memoir, was published this month.

She is survived by her husband, Richard Cobb; three children, Michael Seaton, Dorothy Ann Stinson(Scott) and Jimmy(Kelly) Seaton, as well as several grandchildren and great grandchildren.

There will be a Memorial Service held at noon on Saturday, Jan. 4, 2025 at First Presbyterian Church in Huntington. Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. – noon.  Hall Funeral Home and Crematory in Proctorville is assisting the family with arrangements.
