The Lawrence County Port Authority has received funding from the State of Ohio for asbestos removal at multiple sites.
County Commissioner DeAnna Holliday, who serves on the port authority, said the funds are for four buildings.
“They are spread throughout the county, so that its good news,” she said.
In Ironton, two buildings will receive funding — the U.S. Bank Building, on Third Street, and the Masonic Temple, located at Third and Center streets.
Holliday said the Lawrence County CAO has committed to both buildings.
“So, hopefully, both will have economically development going,” she said.
In Chesapeake, the village’s community center will get funding. Holliday said asbestos removal has already taken place in upper floors, but work needs done on the basement.
“We have children and the entire community going in and out of that building, so we want to be sure it’s all taken care of,” she said.
In South Point, Holliday said funds will go to remove asbestos from the Biomass plant, located at the point.
Holliday said this will need done before workers can do anything with the site. She said it is possible the building may be completely demolished and the site redeveloped, but first an assessment must be done.
Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine announced $86.1 million in state support earlier this month to help clean up and redevelop 81 hazardous brownfield sites in 46 counties, which included the U.S. Bank and Chesapeake Community Center work.
