Lady Dragons use big start to cruise by Blue Angels

PROCTORVILLE — The Fairland Lady Dragons know how to get a cushion and relax.
Fairland built a 25-point first half cushion and cruised to an 84-52 Ohio Valley Conference win over the Gallipolis Blue Angels on Tuesday.
Fairland (7-0, 5-0) raced to a 25-8 first quarter lead as Bailey Russel had a pair of 3-pointers and scored 8 points, Kamryn Barnitz hit trey and had 7 points while Ava Layne hit two 3-pointers and a pair of foul shots for 8 points.
Loulea Walker scored 5 points and Mallory Petro hit a 3-pointer to account for the Gallipolis total.
The lead went to 42-17 at the half as Layne hit two more 3-pointers and scored another 8 points and Barnitz hit a triple as she scored 5 points.
Taylor Barnes hit a 3-pointer for Gallipolis.
The Blue Angels outscored Fairland 17-16 in the third quarter as Kenya Peck scored 10 points including a 3-pointer and 3-of-3 at the line.
Addison Godby had a strong quarter for Fairland with a 3-pointer and scored 9 points with Taegan Leep hitting a trey.
The Lady Dragons came back to win the fourth quarter 26-18 as 8 different players scored with Barnitz hitting a 3-pointer and netting 5 points while Russell and Layne had 4 each with Siera Pemberton and Addyson Cornell both making 3-pointers.
Peck had 8 points and Walker added 6 points in the quarter for Gallipolis (3-4, 2-3).
Layne led the offense with 20 points. Barnitz and Russell scored 17 each and Godby had 13 points, 11 rebounds, 4 assists and 4 steals.
Peck scored 19 points and Walker 13 for the Blue Angels.
The Lady Dragons shot 31-of-70 from the field including 15-of-40 from behind the arc.
Fairland will host Portsmouth at 7 p.m. Saturday in a showdown for first place in the OVC. Both teams are unbeaten.
