Schools in Lawrence County kicked off the Christmas season with events on Thursday.
In Rome Township, at Fairland West Elementary School, the building was packed for a Winter Wonderland celebration.
The crowd of children was energetic in the two rooms of activities, with a two large lines formed for face painting in the gymnasium.
Organizers said about 500 people were in attendance for the two-hour event, which also featured a visit from Santa and Mrs. Claus, food, Christmas karaoke, crafts and photos with The Grinch.
Meanwhile, at Burlington Elementary School, a tree lighting event took place.
Before the lights were turned on for the tree, donated by Hatcher’s Greenhouse, children and parents gathered inside, where principal David Ashworth had them sit around the tree for a reading of “Pick a Pine Tree,” by Patricia Toht.
The event also featured Christmas trivia, while the PTO handed out cookies and hot chocolate to warm up the crowd before it moved outside into the cold night for the lighting.
One of the members of the PTO pointed out the school’s Secret Santa Shop, set up in the gymnasium, which they said had been going on all week and had already sold out and was getting restocked.
Ashworth thanked the crowd for coming to the event, which he said helped to build the Burlington community.
“We’re here not to just celebrate Christmas, but also for a chance for our families to meet,” he said.
