Brass Band of the Tri-State to perform at Marshall on Tuesday
The Brass Band of the Tri-State will present its annual free Christmas concert 7:30 p.m. Tuesday in the Smith Music Hall Recital Hall at Marshall University.
Holiday works to be performed include “Christmas Fanfare,” “Only in Sleep,” “Christmas Variations,” “In The Bleak Midwinter,” “Medieval Christmas,” “Carol Fantasy,” “Christmas Song,” “Winter Wonderland” and “Twelve Days.”
The band is under the direction of Dr. Michael Stroeher, who is also professor of Low Brass at Marshall University.
The brass band performs a variety of music encompassing several genres and styles including traditional brass band music from England and North America, original pieces arranged specifically for the band, musicals, marches, orchestral transcriptions, Salvation Army Band music, and popular selections.
In addition to the annual Christmas concert, the band also performs a fall concert, a spring concert, and performs in Charleston, West Virginia, for Symphony Sunday, the annual fundraiser for the West Virginia Symphony, on the first Sunday in June.
The Brass Band of the Tri-State has been in existence for about 30 years and is comprised of amateur musicians from across the Tri-State and beyond.
The ensemble consists of retirees, community members and music students from Marshall University. Community members represent such diverse occupations as music teachers, college professors, and engineers. They won numerous awards on the international level at the North American Brass Association annual competitions as an active member of the prestigious North American Brass Band Association.
The brass band rehearses once a week on Tuesday evenings from 7–9 p.m. in the Smith Music Hall band room.
They are always seeking new members, so anyone interested in joining or desiring additional information is encouraged to visit the Brass Band of the Tri-State Facebook page.
