Edwin Pinkerton

June 25, 1930–Nov. 11, 2024

Edwin E. “Ed” Pinkerton, 94, of Ironton, left us on Monday, Nov. 11, 2024.

Ed was born on June 25, 1930, to Howard E. and Lois (Strickler) Pinkerton in Newark.

He graduated from Granville High School and attended Newark College of Commerce.

When the Korean Conflict began, he volunteered, and the U.S. Air Force assigned him to the 35th Fighter-Bomber Squadron in Suwon Korea, where he served one year (1951).

Stateside, he had assignments in Memphis, Tennessee; Ardmore, Oklahoma; Selma, Alabama; and San Antonio, Texas.

He was honorably discharged at the rank of staff sergeant in 1954. While working as district service manager for Comptometer Corporation, he purchased a Pontiac from Avery Pontiac, “America’s Oldest Automobile dealership.”

He was so impressed with their integrity that he went back, applied, and was accepted for employment as straight commissioned salesman. And the rest, as they say, is history.

Twenty-five years later, he left Avery Pontiac, having successfully served as Sales Manager of what by then had become the largest Pontiac dealership in Ohio.

He and his wife, Pam, hit the road in their RV, planning to spend that winter in Florida. After spending one winter, they moved to Florida and sold the RV.

Twenty-six years later, after doing all the neat Florida things and selling real estate for Coldwell Banker, they realized it was getting late, so they came home to Ohio to do what all old folks eventually do.

Ed is preceded in death by both parents and by his daughter, Deborah J. Pinkerton.

He is survived by his devoted wife, Pamela Sue (Schafer) Pinkerton, of Ironton; son, Douglas E. (Donna) Pinkerton, of Memphis, Tennessee; sister, Patricia Sue (James) Rogers, of Englewood, Florida; brother, Carl A. (Betty) Pinkerton, of Hilliard; brother, Richard H. (Monique) Pinkerton, of Granville; and many nieces and nephews.

Ed was a born-again Christian who kept trying.

It was Ed’s request that there be no visitation or services and that his remains be cremated.

Wallace Family Funeral Home, South Point, is honored to assist the family with arrangements.
