Carl Irvin Payton, 93, of Ironton, passed away Thursday, Nov. 14, 2024, at Community Hospice Center, Ashland, Kentucky.

He was born Sept. 19, 1931, to the late Cosper James “Cos” and Oakley (Nelson) Payton and is survived by his wife of 72 years, Juanita Faye (Callicoat) Payton.

Carl attended school in Wilgus and Waterloo and served in the U.S. Army.

He was a maintenance inspector for Armco Steel and retired after 30-plus years of service.

Carl was a member of Wilgus Fairview Missionary Baptist Church.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by two brothers, Roy Payton and Nelson Payton; and a sister, Mildred Bowman.

Along with his wife, those left to celebrate his life are a son, Jack Wade (Marcia) Payton, of Gallipolis; a daughter, Carla Fay (Dave) Payton West, of The Woodlands, Texas; two grandsons, Jeremy Wade Payton, of Centerville, and Jefferey Wade Payton, of Columbus; and two great-grandchildren, Nellie Payton and Jackson Wade Payton.

A graveside service will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Mamre Cemetery, Kitts Hill, with Pastor Sam Cooke officiating.
