Flyers lose heartbreak to Green Devils in D5 district semifinals

CHILLICOTHE — Despite being in another division this season, it was expected to be another tough game between the St. Joseph Flyers and North Adams Green Devils.

It was.

North Adams got a goal in each half and battled to a 2-0 win over the Flyers in the Division 5 district semifinals Monday at Zane Trace High School.

North Adams (15-2-2) took a 1-0 lead in the first half when Jaydon Reckers scored off an assist from Beau Hesler with just 5:08 left in the half.

The Green Devils got an insurance goal with 20:38 to play when Cameron McCann scored on a rebound off the goalkeeper.

Flyers’ goalkeeper Beckham Waginger had 6 saves while the Green Devils’ Jayce Rothwell had 16 saves.

St. Joseph took 25 shots to 13 for North Adams with 16 on goal to just 8 for the Green Devils.

The Flyers had 9 corner kicks and 8 fouls while North Adams had 3 corner kicks and 2 fouls.

The Flyers (15-3-1) lose only two players as co-captains Landon “Rocky” Rowe and Wesley Neal are the team’s only seniors.

Both players were four-year starters and were major contributors on offense as the Flyers won back-to-back Southern Ohio Conference-1 titles the past two seasons.

Rowe finished with 67 goals and 65 assists with Neal scoring 73 goals and had 41 assists.
