Flyers win epic battle with Valley for SOC soccer lead

LUCASVILLE — It was billed as a classic showdown and it lived up to its billing.
In a battle for possession of first place in the Southern Ohio Conference 1 soccer race, the St. Joseph Flyers edged the Lucasville Valley Indians 1-0 on Thursday.
The Flyers now lead the SOC-1 with a 5-0 record and they are 11-2 overall. The Indians are 5-3-1 and go 3-1 in the league.
The two teams will meet at 5:15 p.m. on Oct. 9 at St. Joseph.
The only goal of the game came with 22:12 on the first half clock as Carson Lyons scored on a free kick from 23 yards out that found its way into the left corner of the net.
Flyers’ goalkeeper Beckham Waginger got the shutout win as he registered 5 saves as Valley took 10 total shots.
Valley goalkeeper Hunter Sparks had 3 saves as the Flyers took 9 shots with 4 on goal.
St. Joseph had 2 corner kicks while Valley had 3. Each team was called for 5 fouls.
The Flyers visit New Boston for an SOC game on Tuesday and host Eastern Brown next Thursday.
