Playing the Bishop Hartley Hawks, the Ironton Fighting Tigers knew they needed a big game.

What they got was a “Bigs” game.

Ironton quarterback Braden “Bigs” Schreck threw for 195 yards and ran for another 88 as the Fighting Tigers rolled past the Columbus Bishop Hartley Hawks 41-0 on Friday.

Schreck completed 13-of-18 passes as he threw for one touchdown and ran for another.

“We expected a four quarter battle this week and we prepared for this game like we were going to battle all four quarters,” said Schreck.

“It was a test in the first half. This is one I think was an awesome team win and was the best team win out of our five games.”

Ironton (5-0) racked up 507 total yards in creating its fifth straight running clock win. Besides Schreck, Ironton got an additional 39 yards passing on an end around pass by Shaun “Mr. Electric” Terry who also caught 5 passes for 61 yards.

The Fighting Tigers rushed for 273 yards but only 47 in the first half.

Coach Trevon Pendleton said an adjustment at halftime allowed Ironton to run for 226 yards in the second half.

“We actually found something in the second quarter but clockwise we weren’t in a position late there in the second where we could run the ball, not having timeouts and having to throw the ball more than we wanted to,” said Pendleton.

“We found some formations that we liked the way they was lining up that gave us numbers. In the third quarter we was able to execute at a pretty high level and utilize those formations.”

The Ironton defense was up to the task of shutting down the Hawks’ offense. Hartley managed just 198 total yards with 169 coming on the ground and just 29 via the air.

Hartley standout running back Robert Lathon ran 18 times for 113 yards that included a pair of 35-yard runs. Bryson Winbush ran 9 times for 51 yards and caught all 3 Matthew Galich passes for 29 yards.

Ironton took the opening kickoff and went 59 yards in just 5 plays thanks to the Terry pass to Tyler Roach that put the ball at the Harley 11. Zayne Williams scored on a 7-yard run for a 6-0 lead at the 10:26 mark.

Hartley (3-2) drove from its 21-yard line to the Ironton 9 only to have the drive stall on downs.

The Fighting Tigers got the ball out to the 19 and a pass on third down covered 13 yards but a fumble on the play gave the ball back to Hartley at the Ironton 30.

But again the Ironton defense rose to the occasion and held the Hawks to just a one-yard gain on a fourth down at the 25. A holding penalty helped stop the threat.

The Fighting Tigers moved the ball to the Hartley 6-yard line on a 46-yard pass-and-run from Schreck to Williams. But a holding penalty moved the ball back and an interception in the end zone ended the threat.

The Hawks had an 8-play drive but stalled and were forced to punt and Ironton had the ball at their own 20-yard line.

Schreck had a 16-yard pass to Terry and 25-yard completions each to Terry and Nick Sites with the latter taking the ball into the end zone for the score with 1:59 left in the half.

David Fields’ conversion kick opened up the lead to 13-0.

Hartley got the ball to start the second half but ran 4 plays and punted. Ironton then drove 86 yards in 10 plays with Schreck running the final 3 yards and it was 20-0. Schreck’s 37-yard ramble got the ball to the Hawks’ 45 and fueled the drive.

Hartley fumbled the ball and covered it, but the 7-yard loss still gave the ball back to Ironton at the 35.

A 10-yard holding penalty moved the ball back, but Ironton gave the ball to Tyler Carmon on the first play of the fourth quarter and it was 27-0.

Another Ironton drive began in the third quarter and spilled over into the fourth where Tyler Carmon did his usual hard running and danced into the end zone from 2 yards out and it was 34-0 with 8:29 left.

A short Hartley punt gave Ironton the ball at midfield and a 25-yard pass to Carmon and a 25-yard run by Edwards made it 41-0 and ended the game as the final 1:20 ran off.

“Offensively, we were expecting that they were going to play straight man across the board and we practiced and they came out with a mixture of man and some zone. We just figured out what they were doing and just played off of it and we just kept going and going,” said Schreck.

“Our linemen were awesome tonight. They gave me time in the passing game and blocked very well in the running game.”

Ironton will entertain the Clarkson North Chargers of Mississauga, Ontario, Canada, next Friday.
