John Oakes

John C. Oakes went to be with family, friends, and his Lord and Savior on July 10, 2024.

John was the second of four children of the late (Alden Oakes), sister, Suzann Oakes, of Washington and brother, Jeff Oakes (Debbie), of Indiana born of the late Dr. Alden B. Oakes and Ann Oakes (Lantz).

John was born in Brooklyn, New York on Aug. 27, 1947.
John was a graduate of Brandon Hall, Georgia in 1967. He was also a graduate of Hillcrest hospital of Cleveland, where he studied nuclear medicine and became an x-ray technologist. He also attended Ohio University receiving a B.A. in business administration.
John met and married the love of his life in 1976, the late Maria Spachner Oakes. They were married for 43 years and had two devoted children John C. Oakes II (Allison), of Astoria, New York and Laura Oakes, of Ironton.
John was an active member of both his community and church where he was the treasurer of Sessions.

John enjoyed being an usher for The Ohio State University football games for 13 years.

He was a volunteer with his wife Maria for The Ironton High School Million Dollar Marching Band for many years. He also enjoyed locksmithing, playing the bass guitar and spending time with his family and friends.
There will be a visitation 5–7 p.m. Sunday at Phillips Funeral Home, 1004 S. Seventh St., Ironton.

A funeral service will be noon Monday at First Presbyterian Church, 201 N. Fifth St., Ironton, with Pastor Carson Hunt officiating. Burial will follow in Woodland Cemetery, 824 Lorain Street, Ironton.

Visitation will be 11 a.m.–noon Monday at the church.
