Carl White

Carl Edward White, of Ironton, born Jan. 8, 1930, went to meet his Savior on April 25, 2024.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Jeannine; and parents, Jesse and Roxy Mae White.

He is also preceded in death by brothers Franklin, Kenneth, Gordon and Robert White; sisters, Anna Osborne, Patricia Butler, Edna Norris, Betty Heaberlin, Erma Reedy, Helen Turvey, Mary Lewis, Janice Wilson; and four infant siblings.

He leaves behind daughter, Faith (Clint Sutherland); granddaughter, Alexandria Sutherland; sisters, Winnie Deer and Diane Young; special nephew, Ken Heck; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He married Jeannine in August of 1951, they were married for 67 years after dating for six.

Carl was a 1949 graduate of Ironton High School. While at IHS, he excelled in football, basketball, baseball and track, serving as team captain in both football and basketball his senior year. During that time, he won the Robert E. Christian Award.

He was also a graduate of Eastern Kentucky College (now EKU) and Marshall University. While at Eastern, he was a member of the football (three-year starter, defensive back) and baseball teams and the Army ROTC.

After graduating from Eastern, Carl served in the U.S. Army, stationed in Germany as an officer, but also as a player-coach for the base’s football and baseball teams, taking them all the way to the Military Baseball World Series. Upon returning from Germany in 1955, he joined the U.S. Army Reserves.

Also upon return, he began his career as an educator and coach at Dawson-Bryant High School in Coal Grove.

In 1957, he began teaching and coaching at Ironton High School, coaching 8th grade boys basketball and served as assistant coach on the varsity football team.

In 1961, Carl became the Fighting Tigers head football coach, coaching the Tigers for three seasons; during that time, he also served as head baseball coach.

In 1965, Carl’s commute became much shorter, walking out his back door and into the principal’s office of Ironton Junior High School, a position he held until 1978.

From there he moved on to the role of assistant superintendent of Ironton City Schools, where he stayed until his retirement.

In 2015, Carl was inducted into the Ironton Athletic Hall of Fame. Carl was the longest-standing member of the Ironton Country Club, having joined in 1955, he played golf for the last time on February 8, 2024, with nephew, Ken. He was a member of Ironton First Methodist Church.

Carl’s family would like to thank Chuck Brickles, Linda and Mike Burcham and Kara Birkel for their friendship and love.

Funeral service will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at the First Methodist Church, 101 N. Fifth St., Ironton, with Pastor Butch Deer, Pastor Sam Peters, and Pastor Wayne Young officiating.

The White family will receive friends on Tuesday, 11 a.m. until the time of the service at the church.
