AID — Generally, Corn Pops is a breakfast cereal. But not for the Symmes Valley Vikings.

The corn popping on Monday was Vikings’ pitcher Tanner Corn popping the catcher’s mitt for 10 strikeouts in a 10-0 run rule win over the Northwest Mohawks in a Southern Ohio Conference game.

Corn gave up just 4 hits in 6 innings and walked only 2. He also went 2-4 at the plate with a double and 2 runs batted in.

The Vikings (4-4, 2-1) took a 3-0 lead in the first inning.

Luke Niece led off with a walk and scored on a double by Corn. Aydan Taylor reached on an error as Corn scored and Taylor stole second and third and scored on a throwing error.

The lead went to 5-0 in the third inning with 2 outs.

Zander Hurn and Mason Stevenson doubled for a run and Stevenson scored when Braden Hankins reached on an error.

Symmes Valley got a run in the fourth when Will Jones doubled and Taylor singled him home.

The Vikings ended the game early with 4 runs in the sixth inning.

Gradee Holland reached on an error and stole second to start the inning. Niece and Will Jones walked to load the bases and Corn singled home Holland. Taylor walked to force home a run and Tanner Thompson doubled to drive in 2 runs and end the game.

Jones was 1-3 with a double, Taylor 1-3 with 2 RBI, Thompson 1-3 with a double and 2 RBI, Horn 1-3 with a double, Stevenson 1-3 with a double, and Hankins and Holland each 1-3.

Reece Lute, Drew Detwiller and Gavin Powell were 1-3 and Peyton Wolfe 1-2 for Northwest (3-7, 2-3).

The Vikings host Western in an SOC game on Wednesday.
