WEST PORTSMOUTH — There was some good pitching. There was some hitting. Unfortunately, there wasn’t very much defense.

The Fairland Dragons gave up 9 unearned runs as they dropped a season-opening doubleheader to the Portsmouth West Senators 5-2 and 6-2 on Saturday.

In the first game, the Dragons only managed 4 hits and had 5 errors that led to 3 unearned runs.

Ethan Wall worked 4.2 innings and gave up 4 hits, all 5 runs but only 2 earned, struck out 4 and walked 2 in taking the loss. Alex Morgan finished and gave up 2 hits with a strikeout and no walks.

Morgan also went 2-3 with an RBI double Brycen Hunt was 1-2 and Wall 1-3.

Trevor Fike went the distance for the win for West. He gave up one earned run, struck out 11 and walked one.

In the second game, West’s Issak Tipton got the complete game win as he gave up 2 earned runs, struck out 4 and walked 2.

Morgan worked the first 3 innings and allowed 3 hits, 2 runs — both unearned — with 3 strikeouts and a walk. Garrett Cornwell went 3 innings in relief and gave up 2 hits, 4 unearned runs, struck out 4 and walked 2.

The duo only allowed a combined 5 hits.

Blaze Perry, Luke Brown, Carson Sansom and Cornewell were all 1-3, Ben Southard 1-2 with an RBI and Wall was 1-2 with a double as Fairland got 6 hits.
