Charles Thomas

Nov. 9, 1933–March 22, 2020

Charles David “Buddy” Thomas, 86, born Nov. 9, 1933, went to be with the Lord Sunday, March 22, 2020.

He left his loving wife of 66 years, Duddie J. “Dee” Thomas; his son, Scott and Teena Thomas, of South Point; and daughter, Christi and Jerry Crow, of Winchester, Kentucky.

Buddy and Dee had two granddaughters whom they dearly loved, Haley and Tyron Cox, of Flatwoods, Kentucky and Mary and Ryan Matney, of South Point; six great-grandchildren, Kiana and Jada Bruton, Thomas and Jake Arthur and Aiden and Cohen Matney; a great-great-grandson, Kalyn Sietz; and many nieces, nephews and friends.

Dave was preceded in death by his father, Vernon E. Thomas; his mother, Bessie Smith Thomas; his brother, Vernon “Chubby” Thomas; and sister, Betty Wright.

Dave worked at Allied Chemical for 14 years, then he and Dee were in the building business for many years before they both got their real estate license and began selling real estate. Dave got his broker’s license and they opened Thomas Realty in South Point in 1975 and were successful for many years. They later worked for M & M Realty until they retired.

Dave and Dee were members of the South Point Baptist Church for many years, where Dave served as deacon and Dee played the piano and taught Sunday School. They recently attended First Southern Baptist Chapel in South Point, when they were able.

Private family funeral services will be held at Slack and Wallace Funeral Home with Pastor Paul Michael Booth officiating. Burial will follow in Highland Memorial Gardens.

Carl Russ

April 21, 1952–March 22, 2020

Carl Roger Russ, age 67, of South Webster, passed away Sunday, March 22, 2020, at SOMC Hospice in Portsmouth.

He was born April 21, 1952, in Oak Hill, to Carl A. and Edna F. (Mitchum) Russ.

A graduate of South Webster High School, he formerly worked as a manager at Dollar General and a Tow Motor Driver for BM & I Industries. Carl collected coins and stamps and loved to go camping and fishing.

Carl is survived by his wife, Penny K. Sizemore Russ; mother, Edna F. Russ Crace; sons, Toby and wife, Tara Russ McFann, Cory C. Russ, and Nicky Conley; sisters, Teresa Yates, Rhonda McClincic; stepbrothers and sisters, David, Roger, Becky, Debbie, Vickey; grandchildren, C.R. and Cylee McFann; several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Carl A. Russ.

A memorial service will be held at 6 p.m. on Wednesday at D.W. Swick-Nelson Funeral Home in South Webster with Rev. Jesse Sizemore officiating. Interment will private at the convenience of the family. Friends may call on Wednesday from 2–6 p.m. prior to the service.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the funeral home to assist with expenses.

Mary Martin

Mary L. Martin, 77, of Kitts Hill, passed away Thursday, March 19, 2020.

She is survived by her husband, Walter “Marty” Martin, of Kitts Hill; one daughter, Angela Martin Shearer (Alan), of South Charleston, West Virginia; one son, John David Martin, of Kitts Hill; two grandsons, Brek Martin and Christopher Shearer; three great-grandchildren; special nephew, David Armstrong and nieces, Ann Strosnider, Lucy Thomson and Pam Jefferies.

Graveside service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Ashland Cemetery Mausoleum, 1518 Belmont St., Ashland, Kentucky.

Slack and Wallace Funeral Home, South Point, is assisting the family with arrangements.

Julie Sparks

Julie Nichole Sparks, 28, of Crown City, died Monday, March 23, 2020 in St. Mary’s Medical Center, Huntington, West Virginia.

She is survived by her parents, Carl Sparks and Melinda Sparks.

Charlene Elaine Heinz, 65, of Chesapeake, died Monday, March 23, 2020, in Cabell Huntington Hospital, Huntington, West Virginia.

Private family funeral service will be conducted at Hall Funeral Home and Crematory, Proctorville, with Pastor Justin Berry officiating. Burial will be in Spring Hill Cemetery.
