The Ironton Fighting Tigers football team was recognized by city council at their meeting on Thursday.
The team made their first run in two decades to the Ohio High School Athletic Association District 5 championship in December. They took home a silver trophy after losing to the Kirtland Hornets.
A proclamation from the mayor’s office made Dec. 7, 2019 as the “2019 Ironton Fighting Tigers Football State Finalist Day” in the city of Ironton.
Mayor Sam Cramblit, vice mayor Craig Harvey and councilman Chris Haney were all members of the Fighting Tigers when they attended Ironton High School.
“This is near and dear to my heart,” said Harvey, who was also an assistant coach for the Tigers. He said Haney was the one who asked for the team to come before council and be recognized for their victories. “The ninth time being to the state football finals, us being tied for second all-time in play-off appearances, those things alone are worthy of public recognition.”
The Fighting Tigers have made 35 play-off appearances in its history.
The proclamation will be displayed at the high school.
The council gave first reading to Ordinance 20-03, which would set the salaries of the city’s non-union employees, from the mayor to department heads to the council clerk. The salaries will be analyzed and adjusted annually based on performance.
They also passed a resolution appointing Cramblit to the District 15 Public Works Integrating Committee through September 2021. He will serve on the county subcommittee and participate in the county review and prioritization of Ohio Public Works-assisted projects.
