MOREHEAD, Ky. – Marshall men’s basketball head coach Dan D’Antoni earned the 100th win of his career at Marshall in an 89-62 rout of the Morehead State Eagles on Monday night at Ellis T. Johnson Arena. It was the Herd’s first win at Morehead since Nov. 29, 2006.
“This group (Morehead State) always gives us trouble. They just shellacked us a couple of years ago when we won an NCAA Tournament game,” D’Antoni said after the win.
“They play hard and have good coaching, but our kids are starting to mature a little bit. Then you add Andy (Taylor) in there who gives us more ball handling on the floor to run our offense. We shot 37 percent on threes and 45 from the field. We can get better than that, but the hallmark of this team is going to be defense.”
Junior Darius George led the Herd with 16 points and seven rebounds as the forward went 5-for-6 from the field and 5-for-6 from the free-throw line.
Fellow forward Iran Bennett followed George up with 14 points and six rebounds in 17 minutes of play.
Redshirt freshman Andrew Taylor, who appeared in his first game for the Herd and saw his first real court action in nearly a year-and-a-half, scored 13 points. The guard went made three of his eight attempts from beyond-the-arc, dished out three assists, had three steals and grabbed three rebounds in the win.
Sophomore Taevion Kinsey and junior Jarrod West each added 11 points to give Marshall five student-athletes with 10 or more points. The pair also grabbed five boards each, while West also had eight assists to zero turnovers on his stat line.
Marshall came out firing to start the game. The Herd had four runs of at least seven points in the opening half of play, including an 18-2 run that spanned five-and-a-half minutes from 14:57 to 9:28.
Marshall garnered it largest lead of the half of 19, 43-24, after an 8-0 run with a layup by Jannson Williams and a pair of threes from freshman Marko Sarenac with 1:41 left in the opening stanza.
Leading 45-28 at the break, the Herd went 16-of-35 (45.7 percent) from the field and made 8-of-15 (53.3 percent) of its shots from beyond the arc.
Marshall continued its hot shooting in the second half by starting out with 13-2 run capped off by a steal and dunk by Taylor to give the Herd its largest lead of the game at 28 points, 58-30, as the Eagles took a timeout just over four minutes into half.
MU cruised the rest of the way leading by 20 points for nearly the entire half.
NOTES
West’s eight assists are a career-high for the guard.
