County’s shining stars

It’s been a momentous week for schools in Lawrence County.

Tonight, the Ironton Fighting Tigers will be facing off in Canton against the Kirtland Hornets for the Division 5 state football championship and we wish our local team well.

And, as we wait, we would like to celebrate the accomplishments of other students in the county this week in the academic fields.

Congratulations to Sawyer Blackburn, a sixth grader at St. Lawrence School.

After 17 rounds of competition, he emerged as the winner of the 2019 Lawrence County Spelling Bee on Wednesday.

It was the second big year for Blackburn in the event. He took the second place trophy in last year’s bee.

Coming in as runner up this year was Dawson-Bryant eighth grader Addisyn Wood. It was her second time competing in the county bee.

She, and fellow Dawson-Bryant students, were part of another achievement this week.

The school’s Quiz Bowl team won the county’s middle school tournament on Friday.

We congratulate them and their coach Leigh Ann Waginger for this achievement and being regular season winners, as well as Ironton Middle, for coming in as runner-up in both.

All these wins took hard work and dedication by the students, who already are showing what bright futures they have ahead of them.
