Arts are vital to society

On Saturday, 15 bands competed in the 33rd annual Buckeye Classic at Tanks Memorial Stadium in Ironton.
Those attending were treated to a night of performances, which students had spent weeks perfecting, resulting in a dazzling show.
Organizers say the event is important because it gives those involved in the arts a chance to shine.
And the fine arts, whether music, theater or visual arts, are always in need of support. Sadly, these programs are sometimes the first to suffer when budgets are cut, whether in schools or at the government level.
It was obvious to anyone watching the bands that the students had developed a high level of discipline and a work ethic in order to pull off their shows.
Art enriches all of society, from those who create to those who take it in and draw inspiration from it.
Art gives a voice to our humanity and transcends all walks of life.
So we commend the Buckeye Classic organizers and all in Lawrence County who promote the arts, whether it is the Ohio University Southern’s art department and their gallery or the Hutton Wayfarer Gallery in South Point, which showcase visual artists with ties to the region, The Vault Market in Ironton, which gives artisans and crafters a space to sell their wares, or the Ohio River Revival, which brought hours of music to the riverfront over the summer.
These outlets are an immense value to our region and we are richer for all that they champion.
