JACKSON — Murphy’s Law took effect.
The Chesapeake Lady Panthers led by 14 points after three quarters only to lose 38-37 to the Wellston Lady Golden Rockets on Monday in the Division III sectional tournament.
Chesapeake was up 30-16 after three quarters and then everything started to go wrong.
Tory Doles hit four straight 3-pointers and scored 16 of her 23 points in the fourth quarter as Wellston outscored Chesapeake 22-7.
Mya Bouska — who had not scored — hit the second of two foul shots with 6.3 seconds left to snap the tie and send Wellston into the sectional title game.
Maddie Ward scored 19 points to lead the Lady Panthers (8-15). Corinne Ferguson had seven points and Karli Davis hit a 3-pointer and scored five points.
Sydney Mullins had a pair of 3-pointers and scored eight points for the Lady Rockets (11-12).
Ward scored eight points as Chesapeake took a 10-2 first quarter lead.
Ferguson and Ward had four points each and Kandace Pauley hit a 3-pointer as Chesapeake went up 21-12 at the half. Mullins made a 3-pointer and had five points for Wellston.
Davis and Ferguson drained 3-pointers as the Lady Panthers appeared to build a comfortable 30-16 lead after three quarters.
Wellston will now play top-seed Alexander at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
