The two main things St. Joseph Lady Flyers’ coach Bart Burcham likes to see are defense and rebounding.
He must have liked what he saw on Saturday.
The Lady Flyers pulled down 40 rebounds and held the Sciotoville East offensive in check as they beat the Lady Tartans 47-17.
“We played well. Our defense was really good. Our defense and especially rebounding have been great these last eight games,” said Burcham.
“We had a lot of shots we either rushed or just rolled out. The passing in the second half was really good. We got a lot of steals and deflections on our press.”
Bella Whaley had 17 points and eight rebounds to lead the Lady Flyers (9-10). Faith Mahlmeister added nine points and 12 rebounds while Emma Whaley got six points.
St. Joseph took a 14-8 first quarter lead as Bella Whaley scored six points and Kaitlyn Sheridan had four.
Peyton Johnson and Betty Osborne hit 3-pointers for East.
The Lady Flyers pulled in front 25-12 at intermission as Mahlmeister scored four points, Bella Whaley three and Emma Whaley and Chloe Sheridan got two each.
Mahlmeister, Laiken Unger, Bella Whaley and Emma Whaley had baskets in the third quarter and the Lady Flyers were up 33-16.
The St. Joseph defense held East to only a foul shot in the fourth quarter while Bella Whaley scored six points early in the quarter.
Kerri Jenkins, Chloe Sheridan, Unger and Emma Whaley also had baskets.
St. Joseph plays at Rose Hill, Ky., at 6:30 p.m. Monday.
